It turns out one of the post-credits scenes in

Spider-Man: Homecoming

was a last-minute addition. Marvel Studios has popularized the use of mid- and post-credit scenes with their films. Fans now not only expect them in Marvel movies, but similar genre films as well. The first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had subtle allusions to the films taking place in the same universe, but the post credits were very overt about what to expect next in the MCU.

It comes as no surprise that Spider-Man: Homecoming will also feature post-credit scenes, even though this film is being produced by Sony. Despite another studio producing the film, Marvel Studios is still the brains behind the project and were responsible for casting star Tom Holland, in addition to recruiting Jon Watts to helm the film.

In Screen Rant’s exclusive interview with the director, Watts revealed how the Homecoming post-credits scenes came about – and which one is his favorite that audiences definitely should hang around for:

It was kind of an organic process. My first priority was making sure the movie worked and was the strongest thing possible, and then there were a couple of contenders for what the post-credits scenes should be. Sometimes it was like, should that be part of the body of the movie or is it better to come after the credits sequence? But the very, very last one was my favorite and was a last-minute addition to both write and put in the movie. But once that clicked – I think it might have been my editor’s idea. Once that clicked – there’s nothing better. It’s worth waiting for.

How those post-credit scenes take shape have had their own stories through the years. Many films in Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the MCU have featured several mid- and post-credit scenes. Ant-Man borrowed a scene directly from Captain America: Civil War for one of its post-credit scenes, whereas Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured five scenes during the credit sequence created specifically for that movie..

Marvel usually has one serious scene that teases a sequel or other film in the MCU and one comedy scene. That trend can be traced back to Joss Whedon’s Avengers, when the director famously shot the movie’s shawarma scene last minute during the New York premiere of the film.

What Sony and Marvel are cooking up for the

Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credits scenes are still being kept under lock-and-key. Going by past history, one of them will probably be played for laughs while another will tease something in the future. Considering that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that Peter Parker will be leading audiences into Phase 4 of the MCU, one of those scenes may hint at just what kind of changes we can expect Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 to create for the studio, moving forward.
